Frequently asked questions about Barcode generator
- How does a barcode differ from a QR code, and which should I use?
- A barcode (1D) encodes only horizontally, so it holds little data — usually a number or short ID — but it prints cheaply and laser scanners in shops and warehouses read it quickly and reliably, which suits product numbers, shipping cartons and asset tags. A QR code encodes both horizontally and vertically, holding URLs, long text and Chinese, and scans from any angle when more information is needed. The two are not interchangeable: the same number can be generated in either symbology.
- Why does the generated value differ from what I typed?
- The last digit of EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 is a check digit computed from the preceding digits: the page appends it when you type only the payload, and corrects it when the checksum does not match, telling you what changed. Code 39 only supports uppercase, so lowercase is uppercased automatically, and Codabar gets A…A added when you omit the start and stop characters. "Actually encoded" always shows the exact string printed in the barcode.
- What happens when the content exceeds the QR code capacity?
- The page warns you and shows the current QR code version and module count; you can shorten the text, or adjust the error-correction level, quiet zone and size, and generate again.
- Can the generated QR code be used commercially?
- Yes. Generation and decoding both run locally in the browser, the output carries no watermark and there are no extra usage limits.
- Do I need to register or pay to use Barcode generator?
- Almost every tool is free, needs no registration or sign-in and has no usage limit; the few pay-per-use features (such as AI watermark removal, AI image generation, AI upscaling, AI annotation, and AI flowchart, mind-map and Mermaid generation) state their prices on the page.
